src=\"https:\/\/xiaogushi.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/\u5192\u72af\u4eba\u7684\u5723\u8bde-\u64ad\u5ba2\u56de\u987e.m4a\"><\/audio><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>\u5f1f\u5144\u59d0\u59b9\u4eec\uff0c\u9884\u795d\u5927\u5bb6\u5723\u8bde\u5feb\u4e50\uff01<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u5982\u679c\u4f60\u4eca\u5929\u6536\u5230\u4e86\u5723\u8bde\u8d3a\u5361\uff0c\u4f60\u4f1a\u671f\u76fc\u8d3a\u5361\u4e0a\u5199\u4ec0\u4e48\u554a\uff1f\u201c\u5728\u81f3\u9ad8\u4e4b\u5904\u8363\u8000\u5f52\u4e8e\u795e\uff0c\u5728\u5730\u4e0a\u5e73\u5b89\u5f52\u4e8e\u4ed6\u6240\u559c\u60a6\u7684\u4eba\u201d\uff0c\u6216\u8005\u4ec0\u4e48\u201c\u5927\u559c\u7684\u4fe1\u606f\u201d\uff0c\u201c\u5e73\u5b89\u559c\u4e50\u201d\u5bf9\u4e0d\u5bf9\uff1f<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u4f46\u5982\u679c\u4f60\u6536\u5230\u4e00\u5f20\u8d3a\u5361\u4e0a\u8fb9\u5199\u7740\uff1a\u201c\u8fd9\u5b69\u5b50\u88ab\u7acb\uff0c\u662f\u8981\u53eb\u8bb8\u591a\u4eba\u8dcc\u5012\uff0c\u53c8\u8981\u505a\u6bc1\u8c24\u7684\u8bdd\u67c4\uff0c\u4f60\u81ea\u5df1\u7684\u5fc3\u4e5f\u8981\u88ab\u5200\u523a\u900f\u201d\u4f60\u4f1a\u600e\u4e48\u60f3\uff1f\u8fd9\u662f\u8def\u52a0\u798f\u97f32\u7ae034-35\u8282\u7684\u8bdd\u3002<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u4f60\u4f1a\u4e0d\u4f1a\u89c9\u5f97\u5bf9\u65b9\u75af\u4e86\uff1f\u4f46\u8fd9\u5176\u5b9e\u5c31\u662f\u5723\u8bde\u8282\u53d1\u751f\u7684\u4e8b\uff0c\u897f\u9762\uff0c\u4e00\u4f4d\u7b49\u5019\u4e86\u5f25\u8d5b\u4e9a\u4e00\u8f88\u5b50\u7684\u8001\u5723\u5f92\uff0c\u5bf9\u521a\u51fa\u751f\u7684\u8036\u7a23\u548c\u9a6c\u5229\u4e9a\u8bf4\u7684\u795d\u8bcd\u3002\u6211\u4eec\u901a\u5e38\u8ba4\u4e3a\u5723\u8bde\u8282\u5e94\u8be5\u662f\u6e29\u99a8\u751c\u871c\u7684\uff0c\u4f46\u897f\u9762\u544a\u8bc9\u6211\u4eec\uff0c\u5723\u8bde\u8282\u662f\u4e00\u6b21\u5de8\u5927\u7684\u5192\u72af\u3002\u5982\u679c\u4f60\u6ca1\u6709\u88ab\u5192\u72af\uff0c\u53ef\u80fd\u4f60\u8fd8\u4e0d\u8ba4\u8bc6\u5723\u8bde\u8282\u3002<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u5176\u5b9e\u8fd9\u79cd\u5192\u72af\u5e76\u4e0d\u65b0\u9c9c\uff0c\u5f53\u6211\u4eec\u56de\u5230\u8036\u7a23\u964d\u751f\u7684\u90a3\u523b\uff0c\u6211\u4eec\u5c31\u80fd\u770b\u5230\u4e16\u754c\u5bf9\u4ed6\u7684\u654c\u610f\u3002\u6bd4\u5982\u5ba2\u5e97\u91cc\u6ca1\u6709\u5730\u65b9\u3001\u5e0c\u5f8b\u738b\u5bf9\u5a74\u513f\u8036\u7a23\u5c55\u5f00\u7684\u706d\u7edd\u6027\u5c60\u6740\u7b49\u7b49\u3002\u5176\u5b9e\u8036\u7a23\u4e0d\u7ba1\u5230\u54ea\uff0c\u4eba\u4eec\u5bf9\u4ed6\u603b\u662f\u6709\u4e00\u79cd\u82e5\u5373\u82e5\u79bb\u7684\u5f20\u529b\uff0c\u4e00\u65b9\u9762\u88ab\u4ed6\u7684\u6559\u8bad\u5438\u5f15\uff0c\u53e6\u4e00\u65b9\u9762\u88ab\u4ed6\u5192\u72af\u3002\u6211\u4eec\u4e0a\u661f\u671f\u770b\u5230\u7684\u683c\u62c9\u68ee\u4eba\u7684\u6545\u4e8b\u91cc\u5c31\u662f\u5982\u6b64\uff0c\u90a3\u4e2a\u5730\u65b9\u7684\u4eba\u770b\u5230\u8036\u7a23\u884c\u4e86\u8d76\u9b3c\u7684\u795e\u8ff9\u540e\uff0c\u7adf\u7136\u592e\u6c42\u8036\u7a23\u79bb\u5f00\u3002\u5723\u7ecf\u91cc\u7528\u4e00\u53e5\u8bdd\u201c\u4f17\u4eba\u5c31\u592e\u6c42\u8036\u7a23\u79bb\u5f00\u4ed6\u4eec\u7684\u5883\u754c\u201d\u3002<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u4eca\u5929\u6211\u4eec\u6765\u770b\u770b\u5723\u8bde\u662f\u5982\u4f55\u5192\u72af\u6211\u4eec\u7684\uff1a\u4ed6\u5192\u72af\u4e86\u6211\u4eec\u7684\u5c0a\u4e25\uff0c\u5192\u72af\u4e86\u6211\u4eec\u7684\u7406\u667a\uff0c\u5192\u72af\u4e86\u6211\u4eec\u7684\u76fc\u671b\u3002\u7531\u6b64\u6211\u4eec\u53ef\u4ee5\u66f4\u6df1\u5730\u8ba4\u8bc6\u5230\u9488\u5bf9\u6211\u4eec\u90a3\u79cd\u957f\u9614\u9ad8\u6df1\uff0c\u4e0d\u88ab\u6211\u4eec\u7406\u89e3\u7684\u7231\u3002<br>\u8036\u7a23\u5192\u72af\u4e86\u4eba\u7684\u5c0a\u4e25<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u5f53\u5723\u7075\u611f\u5b55\u9a6c\u5229\u4e9a\u65f6\uff0c\u4ed6\u6709\u6ca1\u6709\u548c\u9a6c\u5229\u4e9a\u5546\u91cf\uff1f\u54ce\uff0c\u8499\u5927\u6069\u7684\u5973\u513f\uff0c\u6211\u501f\u4f60\u7684\u809a\u5b50\u7528\u4e00\u7528\u597d\u5417\uff1f\u6ca1\u6709\u554a\uff01\u751a\u81f3\u5723\u7075\u53ef\u4ee5\u9009\u4e00\u4e2a\u5df2\u7ecf\u7ed3\u5a5a\u4f46\u662f\u6ca1\u6709\u5b69\u5b50\u7684\u5973\u4eba\u554a\uff0c\u4e3a\u4ec0\u4e48\u4e13\u95e8\u9009\u4e86\u8fd9\u4e2a\u5728\u8ba2\u5a5a\u8fd8\u6ca1\u7ed3\u5a5a\u7684\u5973\u5b50\u5462\uff1f\u597d\u50cf\u795e\u662f\u5728\u4e13\u95e8\u6311\u6218\u4eba\u7684\u5c0a\u4e25\uff0c\u523b\u610f\u628a\u4eba\u7f6e\u4e8e\u4e00\u79cd\u5c34\u5c2c\u3001\u751a\u81f3\u88ab\u7f9e\u8fb1\u7684\u5883\u5730\u3002\u4e3a\u4ec0\u4e48\u5462\uff1f<br>\u56de\u7b54\u8fd9\u4e2a\u95ee\u9898\u524d\uff0c\u6211\u5148\u95ee\u51e0\u4e2a\u95ee\u9898\uff1a\u5728\u5ea7\u7684\uff0c\u4e0b\u4e2a\u6708\u8981\u5f00\u7684\u4e16\u754c\u7ecf\u6d4e\u8bba\u575b\u8fbe\u6c83\u65af\u5cf0\u4f1a\uff0c\u8c01\u8981\u53bb\uff1f\u90a3\u6211\u8bf4\u4e2a\u5c0f\u7684\uff0c\u4e0b\u5468\u8981\u53ec\u5f00\u7684\u5168\u56fd\u8d22\u653f\u5de5\u4f5c\u4f1a\u8bae\u8c01\u8981\u53bb\uff1f<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u4f60\u4eec\u660e\u767d\u6211\u7684\u610f\u601d\u4e86\u5417\uff1f\u5982\u679c\u4ed6\u662f\u4f53\u9762\u5730\u6765\u5230\u4eba\u95f4\uff0c\u5c31\u610f\u5473\u7740\u798f\u97f3\u4f1a\u6709\u95e8\u69db\u3002\u5982\u679c\u4ed6\u964d\u751f\u5728\u6df1\u5b85\u5927\u9662\uff0c\u5351\u5fae\u7684\u7267\u7f8a\u4eba\u662f\u770b\u4e0d\u4e86\u4ed6\u7684\uff0c\u4ed6\u4f1a\u53ea\u662f\u7cbe\u82f1\u9636\u7ea7\u7684\u6551\u4e3b\u3002\u6211\u4eec\u6839\u672c\u6ca1\u6709\u673a\u4f1a\u63a5\u89e6\u4ed6\uff01<br>\u6240\u4ee5\u56e0\u4e3a\u8036\u7a23\u8981\u4ee5\u5351\u5fae\u7684\u65b9\u5f0f\u964d\u4e34\u4eba\u95f4\uff0c\u4ed6\u5c31\u8981\u9a6c\u5229\u4e9a\u6253\u7834\u4eba\u7c7b\u5bf9\u201c\u4f53\u9762\u201d\u8fd9\u4e2a\u5076\u50cf\u7684\u656c\u62dc\u3002\u795e\u8981\u544a\u8bc9\u6211\u4eec\uff0c\u771f\u6b63\u7684\u5c0a\u4e25\u4e0d\u5728\u662f\u4f60\u5728\u4eba\u524d\u591a\u98ce\u5149\uff0c\u800c\u662f\u4f60\u662f\u5426\u88ab\u4e3b\u4f7f\u7528\u3002<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u8fd9\u5bf9\u6211\u4eec\u6709\u4ec0\u4e48\u610f\u4e49\u5462\uff1f\u8036\u7a23\u6562\u4ee5\u79c1\u751f\u5b50\u3001\u672a\u5a5a\u5148\u5b55\u8fd9\u79cd\u7f9e\u8fb1\u7684\u5f62\u8c61\u6765\u5230\u4eba\u95f4\uff0c\u6211\u4eec\u6562\u4e0d\u6562\u5728\u5f1f\u5144\u59d0\u59b9\u9762\u524d\u66b4\u9732\u81ea\u5df1\u7684\u8f6f\u5f31\uff1f\u6211\u4eec\u662f\u4e0d\u662f\u660e\u660e\u5bb6\u91cc\u6709\u51b7\u6218\u7206\u53d1\uff0c\u6765\u5230\u6559\u4f1a\u4e5f\u8981\u6324\u51fa\u7b11\u5bb9\uff0c\u4e92\u9053\u5e73\u5b89\uff1f\u6211\u4eec\u662f\u4e0d\u662f\u660e\u660e\u5b69\u5b50\u6559\u80b2\u51fa\u4e86\u5927\u95ee\u9898\uff0c\u8fd8\u662f\u53ea\u62a5\u559c\u4e0d\u62a5\u5fe7\uff1f\u6211\u4eec\u662f\u4e0d\u662f\u660e\u660e\u5fc3\u91cc\u5bf9\u795e\u5bf9\u5f1f\u5144\u59d0\u59b9\u5145\u6ee1\u82e6\u6bd2\uff0c\u8fd8\u662f\u8bf4\uff1a\u201c\u611f\u8c22\u4e3b\uff1f\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u5982\u679c\u6211\u4eec\u975e\u8981\u7ef4\u6301\u81ea\u5df1\u5b8c\u7f8e\u7684\u4eba\u8bbe\uff0c\u5c31\u76f8\u5f53\u4e8e\u7aef\u7740\u67b6\u5b50\u6765\u5230\u9a6c\u69fd\u524d\uff0c\u5728\u8036\u7a23\u9762\u524d\u88c5\u6837\u5b50\u3002\u90a3\u4e9b\u4e1c\u65b9\u6765\u7684\u535a\u58eb\u6765\u5230\u5a74\u513f\u8036\u7a23\u524d\u90fd\u8981\u5c48\u819d\u8dea\u62dc\uff0c\u6211\u4eec\u5c31\u4e0d\u8981\u518d\u7aef\u67b6\u5b50\u4e86\u3002<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>2\u3001\u8036\u7a23\u5192\u72af\u4eba\u4eec\u7684\u7406\u667a<br>\u7ae5\u8d1e\u5973\u600e\u4e48\u53ef\u80fd\u6000\u5b55\uff1f\u8fd9\u662f\u6211\u4eec\u5927\u8111\u60f3\u4e0d\u901a\u7684\u3002\u8fd9\u662f\u56e0\u4e3a\u6551\u6069\u5b8c\u5168\u6765\u81ea\u795e\uff0c\u6ca1\u6709\u4eba\u7684\u4e00\u70b9\u70b9\u4e3b\u6743\u3002\u5982\u679c\u662f\u9009\u62e9\u4e00\u4e2a\u5df2\u7ecf\u7ed3\u5a5a\u4f46\u6ca1\u6709\u5b69\u5b50\u7684\u5973\u4eba\uff0c\u4eba\u53ef\u80fd\u4f1a\u89c9\u5f97\u5a74\u513f\u7684\u8bde\u751f\u6709\u4eba\u7684\u529f\u52b3\uff0c\u6bd4\u5982\u6240\u7f57\u95e8\u662f\u5927\u536b\u548c\u62d4\u793a\u5df4\u751f\u7684\uff0c\u4eba\u4eec\u4f1a\u4e0d\u81ea\u89c9\u7684\u8fd9\u91cc\u6709\u5927\u536b\u7684\u529f\u52b3\u3002\u6bd4\u5982\u5728\u5723\u6bbf\u7684\u843d\u6210\u5e86\u795d\u540e\u4eba\u4eec\u662f\u8fd9\u4e48\u8ba8\u8bba\u6240\u7f57\u95e8\u7684\uff1a\u2026\u2026\u4ed6\u4eec\u90fd\u4e3a\u738b\u795d\u798f\u3002\u56e0\u89c1\u8036\u548c\u534e\u5411\u4ed6\u4ec6\u4eba\u5927\u536b\u548c\u4ed6\u6c11\u4ee5\u8272\u5217\u6240\u65bd\u7684\u4e00\u5207\u6069\u60e0\uff0c\u5c31\u90fd\u5fc3\u4e2d\u559c\u4e50\uff0c\u5404\u5f52\u5404\u5bb6\u53bb\u4e86\u3002\u6240\u7f57\u95e8\u7684\u6210\u529f\uff0c\u5728\u767e\u59d3\u773c\u91cc\uff0c\u5f88\u5927\u7a0b\u5ea6\u4e0a\u662f\u795e\u5bf9\u5927\u536b\u5e94\u8bb8\u7684\u5151\u73b0\u3002\u5728\u6240\u7f57\u95e8\u665a\u5e74\u72af\u7f6a\u65f6\uff0c\u751a\u81f3\u795e\u81ea\u5df1\u90fd\u8bf4\uff1a\uff08<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bibleserver.com\/CUVS\/%EF%A6%9C%E7%8E%8B%E7%BA%AA%E4%B8%8A11%3A13\" class=\"bibleserver extern\" target=\"_blank\">\u5217\u738b\u7eaa\u4e0a class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Offensive Christmas<\/h1>\n\n\n\n<p>Dear brothers and sisters, wish you a merry Christmas in advance!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you received a Christmas card today, what would you expect to see written on it? &#8220;Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace to men of good will&#8221;, or some message like &#8220;Good tidings of great joy&#8221;, &#8220;Peace and joy&#8221;, right?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But what if you received a card that said: &#8220;This child is destined to cause the falling and rising of many in Israel, and to be a sign that will be spoken against, so that the thoughts of many hearts will be revealed\u2014and a sword will pierce your own soul too&#8221;? What would you think?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Would you think the sender had gone mad? Yet this is exactly what happened at Christmas. Simeon, an elderly saint who had waited a lifetime for the Messiah, spoke this blessing to the infant Jesus and his mother Mary. We usually think of Christmas as a time of warmth and sweetness, but Simeon tells us that Christmas is a great offense. If you have not been offended, perhaps you do not yet know the true meaning of Christmas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In fact, this offense is nothing new. When we look back to the moment of Jesus&#8217; birth, we can see the world&#8217;s hostility toward him. For example, there was no room for him in the inn; King Herod launched a genocidal massacre of infant boys in search of Jesus, and so on. In truth, wherever Jesus went, people always felt a tense ambivalence toward him\u2014drawn to his teachings on one hand, yet offended by him on the other. We saw this in the story of the Gerasenes last week: after witnessing Jesus perform the miracle of casting out demons, the people there actually begged him to leave their region. The Bible records it this way: &#8220;And the people begged Jesus to leave their district.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Today, let us explore how Christmas offends us: it offends our dignity, our reason, and our expectations. Through this, we can gain a deeper understanding of that immeasurable, unfathomable love of God\u2014a love that often transcends our comprehension.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>## 1. Jesus Offends Human Dignity<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When the Holy Spirit conceived Jesus in Mary&#8217;s womb, did he consult with her first? Did he say, &#8220;O favored one, may I borrow your womb for a while?&#8221; Absolutely not! What is more, the Holy Spirit could have chosen a married woman who was childless. Why did he specifically select a young woman who was only betrothed, not yet married? It seems as if God deliberately set out to challenge human dignity, intentionally placing Mary in an awkward, even humiliating situation. Why would he do this?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Before answering that question, let me ask you a few others: Among those present here today, who will be attending the World Economic Forum in Davos next month? Let me make it more down-to-earth\u2014who will be going to the National Financial Work Conference next week?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Do you see what I mean? If Jesus had come into the world in a respectable, dignified manner, it would have meant that the gospel had a threshold for entry. If he had been born in a grand mansion, the humble shepherds would never have been able to visit him; he would have been a savior only for the elite class. We ordinary people would have had no opportunity to approach him at all!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Therefore, because Jesus chose to come into the world in humility, he called Mary to break humanity&#8217;s idolatry of &#8220;respectability&#8221;. God wants to teach us that true dignity does not lie in how impressive we appear to others, but in whether we are used by the Lord.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What does this mean for us? Jesus dared to come into the world in the humiliated form of a child born out of wedlock. Do we dare to expose our weaknesses before our brothers and sisters? Do we put on a smile and exchange greetings of &#8220;peace&#8221; when we come to church, even though our family is going through a cold war? Do we only share our joys but hide our sorrows, even when our children are facing serious educational problems? Do we say &#8220;Thank you, Lord&#8221; with our lips, while our hearts are filled with bitterness toward God and our fellow believers?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If we insist on maintaining a perfect image of ourselves, it is like approaching the manger with our heads held high, putting on a show before Jesus. The wise men from the East knelt down in worship before the infant Jesus\u2014so let us stop pretending to be something we are not.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>## 2. Jesus Offends Human Reason<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>How can a virgin conceive a child? This is something our human minds cannot comprehend. The reason is that salvation comes entirely from God, with no room for human merit or control. If God had chosen a married, childless woman, people might have thought that the child&#8217;s birth involved some human contribution. For example, Solomon was born to David and Bathsheba, and people would unconsciously attribute part of Solomon&#8217;s success to David&#8217;s influence. After the dedication of the temple, this is how people spoke of Solomon: &#8220;&#8230;they blessed the king. Then they all returned home, joyful and glad in heart for all the good things the Lord had done for his servant David and his people Israel.&#8221; In the eyes of the people, Solomon&#8217;s success was largely the fulfillment of God&#8217;s promise to David. Even when Solomon sinned in his old age, God himself said: (1 Kings 11:13) &#8220;Nevertheless, I will not take the whole kingdom out of his hand; I have given him one tribe for the sake of my servant David and for the sake of Jerusalem, which I have chosen.&#8221; This only reinforced the human logic of &#8220;deserved merit&#8221;: if a father is good, his son benefits; if a father is a hero, his son inherits legitimacy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is like God preparing a lavish banquet and inviting us to dine. But we do not want to come empty-handed, so we bring two plain steamed buns and place them on the table. The virgin birth is like God taking our steamed buns and throwing them away, then saying, &#8220;This feast is entirely my provision\u2014what do your buns have to do with it? Your meager offerings only cheapen the banquet!&#8221; Is this not an offense to our pride? You might think, &#8220;I do not want to be a beggar, living off handouts!&#8221; But the gospel declares: &#8220;You are exactly a beggar.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This logic is clear enough when stated plainly, yet in our daily lives, we still try to contribute something to our own salvation. For instance, we often hear comments like this in the church: &#8220;Oh, that brother is a church worker, yet he still smokes and drinks\u2014his spiritual life must be lacking!&#8221; This kind of thinking relies on &#8220;what I do not do&#8221; to build up self-righteousness and confidence before God. We assume that God accepts us because we are more upright than others! If refraining from immorality were enough to please God, then the dead would be the most holy of all.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are also brothers and sisters among us who are eager to do good works. After serving, they tend to exhibit one of two behaviors: 1. They like others to know what they have done and how much they have given, so they may subtly drop hints in conversation. 2. They appear more &#8220;spiritual&#8221;\u2014they do not tell anyone, but they congratulate themselves inwardly: &#8220;Oh God, look at all I have done. I am so good.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On the surface, these actions may not seem wrong. After all, people in the world often post their donation amounts on social media or show off big donation checks. But in God&#8217;s eyes, this is sin\u2014because we are trying to establish our own righteousness. To establish our own righteousness is to reject the righteousness that God freely gives us.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That is why Jesus said: &#8220;So when you have done all you have been commanded, say, &#8216;We are unworthy servants; we have only done our duty.'&#8221; (Luke 17:10 NIV) This sounds quite uncompromising! Jesus is offending our human reason, making it clear that all our ability to do good comes from him, all righteousness comes from him, and all rewards come from him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>## 3. Jesus Offends Human Expectations<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When Jesus was born as a tiny infant, who could have imagined that he was the promised King of Israel? People were expecting a king who would be mightier than David and wiser than Solomon\u2014a ruler who would defeat the Roman Empire. But what could this baby do? He could not even hold up his own head, let alone wield a sword or feed himself. And in the end, he died a shameful death on a cross! All their earthly hopes were shattered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dear brothers and sisters, as we sit here today, do we think that the Roman Empire is something distant and irrelevant? But let me ask you this: Who is your &#8220;Roman Empire&#8221;?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Is it your husband or wife, with whom you are barely getting along? Is it the crushing burden of your monthly mortgage and car loan payments? Is it that terrifying indicator on your medical check-up report? Or is it your harsh, unkind boss?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But Jesus did not come to help you fight against your spouse, your financial troubles, your boss, or your illnesses. If that were his purpose, he would never have needed to go to the cross!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The devil can already do all those things for you. Think about it\u2014does that not ring true? The devil can give you the power to curse and get back at anyone; he can provide you with ill-gotten wealth to satisfy your vanity; he can even temporarily remove your sickness! How deceptive this is! It is true that in his mercy, God may, according to your capacity, lift some of these burdens from you. But more often than not, these very struggles are the cross he has measured out for you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Brothers and sisters, Jesus offends our prideful desire to save face in matters of dignity; he offends our human tendency to claim merit for ourselves in matters of reason; and he offends our fleshly longing for comfort and ease in matters of expectation. But in truth, Jesus does not only offend us in these three areas\u2014he offends us in every aspect of our lives! The first meaning of Christmas is that God comes to offend us!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Yet we must understand this: the reason we feel offended is that we have offended him first. Our fallen human nature has completely reversed the order of right and wrong.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We tend to treat God as a mere tool to do our bidding, which is an affront to His divine dignity. We think we can govern ourselves and manage the world on our own, which is an insult to His infinite wisdom. We regard a life of unbroken ease as the greatest good, yet this offends the noble image and likeness in which God created us.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But this is not the height of our affront to Him. The ultimate offense was inflicted upon Jesus on the cross. When Jesus was pierced in the heart with a spear on that cross, the hearts of all who had placed their hopes in Him were pierced as well. People realized that Jesus was not the Messiah they had longed for, not the leader they had imagined, not the rabbi who would bestow dignity upon them. He bore all our affronts against Him and died\u2014and in that moment, the hopes of all those hearts died too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What happened next? With Jesus\u2019 resurrection, those dead hearts were brought back to life! People came to see that Jesus truly was the long-awaited Savior. All our offenses against Him were forgiven. But now, what should we do with the ways we have been &#8220;offended&#8221; by Him?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Brothers and sisters, Jesus said: &#8220;Blessed is anyone who does not stumble on account of me.&#8221; If you feel offended by Jesus, that is a sign that He has broken into your darkness\u2014a sign that light has entered your shadowed place. Just as in the story of the Gerasene man we shared last week: Jesus entered his life without asking permission, offending the entire region of the Decapolis. Yet in the end, He brought light to that whole area. If we can accept his offense, we will not only transform ourselves, but also change the entire region.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you never feel offended by Jesus, I am sorry to say that you may not have truly opened your heart to Him. If you want Him to come into your innermost being, you must allow Him to pierce your heart, to tear down the roof of your self-proclaimed dignity (as we read earlier in the Gospel of Mark), to dismantle the roof of your human reasoning, to break down the roof of your worldly expectations\u2014until He reaches the very chamber of your soul. There, He will speak to you and say:&nbsp;<em>Son, your sins are forgiven<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As we partake in the Lord\u2019s Supper today, when you take the bread, remember that it was once whole. It was torn into pieces because of our affronts against Jesus. When you feel as though you have been torn apart by Christ, know this: it is new life sprouting within you. The One who was truly torn apart is Christ Himself. Instead of retaliating against us, He uses the very act of our tearing Him apart\u2014so that when we eat this broken bread, we are united with Him.
